Martin Boyle is a good player, but he isn’t what Celtic need

Rumours are rife tonight with Celtic potentially being interested in signing Hibs attacker Martin Boyle. The asking fee is believed to be £3m.

Without doubt Boyle is a good player. I like him. Would he improve Celtic? Personally, I don’t think so.

Boyle plays predominantly as a right forward or up front. If Ange was to bring him in to play in the right, is he going to get ahead of Forrest or Abada? Maeda can also play on the right, so can Jota, so can Johnston.

Up front? He definitely isn’t going to get in ahead of Kyogo or Maeda. Is he better than Giakoumakis and Ajeti? On his day, potentially, but he just isn’t consistent enough. I think if Boyle consistently played to the level he is capable of, like he did against Sevco if the cup semi-final where he scored a hat-trick, then he would have moved to a better club a long time ago.

I think signing Boyle would be like Strachan signing Willow Flood from Dundee Utd a few years back. It would be a signing that weakens another team in the league, without improving our own.
