Time To Bring Fit Again Celtic Defender Back Into Team, But Not Just For Defensive Qualities

Celtic still have comfortably the best defence in the league, conceding just 17 goals from 28 games played, with 2nd placed Sevco conceding 24.

However, despite keeping another clean sheet at Easter Road today against Hibs, we have been conceding too many goals of late. Nine goals in fact in the last five games before the match today.

Carl Starfelt started the season poorly but then grew into his role as a Celtic defender and was very good for a period of time, but has looked poor again as of late, making bad decisions and letting players go past him too often.

With Christopher Jullien now fit again after his long term injury and Starfelt’s form dipping, it is the perfect time to bring the big Frenchman back into the starting XI.

But, perhaps just as importantly, this would give us a much needed boost at set pieces, particularly at corners, where at 6ft5, Jullien is a huge threat in the air and has 5 goals for the club in 37 appearances, I believe all from set pieces, and he scored 7 goals for Tolouse before he came here and 9 for Dijon previous to that.

Celtic barely ever score from set pieces, these days most of our corners are played short and end up being a total waste. Bringing Jullien back into the side will mean we can stop this short corner nonsense and play crosses into the box for Jullien to attack, it would be vital to have this goal threat back in our arsenal again, especially in days like today, where we just didn’t look capable of scoring from open play.

I would start Jullien alongside Carter-Vickers at home to St Mirren on Wednesday night.
