So reports have now surfaced that apparent Celtic target Vinicius Souza prefers a move to Turkish side Fenerbahce over a switch to Parkhead.
Apparently, Celtic is a strong option for the player, as he wants to play in Europe and we of course will be guaranteed Champions League group stage football next season, but according to reports, Turkey is his preferred destination.
Fenerbahce will be playing in Champions League qualifiers, so the player could well wait and see the outcome and whether Fener actually make it to the Champions League or not before making his decision.
The would be a smart move on his part to some extent, but there is a chance that both clubs may move on to other targets, for example, Fener might want a new player in that position in order to help them progress through the qualifiers, and Ange may feel if he isn’t 100% keen on coming, then he isn’t the player for him.
Another thing to consider is what happened with Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis last summer.
Werder Bremen were fighting with Celtic for his signature, and the reports stated that Werder were his preferred club. But, of course, that move never actually happened, and he joined Celtic and was a great success last season.
Giakoumakis has spoke about his decision to come to Celtic, saying that when such a big club like us is interested in you, you simply have to come.
So was that really the case for him? Was Celtic in fact his preferred choice over Bremen, or for whatever reason did that move simply fall through and he had to go with his second choice? Who knows?
But it just tells us that while there may be some substance over our rumoured targets preferring to join other clubs, we have to keep it mind that it could simply all be nonsense paper talk, and even if Fenerbahce is Souza’s preferred choice, a phone call with Ange Postecoglou and a visit to look around Celtic Park, can easily change that.
