As exciting as it is looking at the transfer rumours of the players linked with a move to Celtic this summer, along with the fantastic business we have already completed so far in this window, it is also important to take a look at some of the younger players who are coming through our youth academy and the B team, and looking to make the step up into the first team.
Scott Robertson is definitely a player I will be keeping an eye on during pre-season, and I hope to see him get plenty of game time in the friendlies we will be playing.
Robertson spent last season on loan at Crewe Alexandra, playing 20 games and scoring one goal in England’s League One, and he apparently made a very good impression during his time down there.
He actually gave an interview about a month ago now, explaining how determined he was to break into Celtic’s first team, and how much of an inspiration close pal Anthony Ralston’s Celtic career resurgence has been for him.
His time at Crewe was cut short due to a knee injury that required surgery, but he said at the time he should be fit and raring to go for pre-season.
With Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic leaving the club, there is definitely opportunity for Robertson to stake his place in the Celtic side this season. He’s been to England on three separate loan deals now, so I think this season he will be looking to stay at Celtic in the hopes of making a breakthrough.
He is also entering the final year of his contract, so that will also be interesting to see what happens with that. I haven’t seen a lot of him, but from what I have seen, he looks to be a strong, ball playing midfielder, with good energy and wide range of passing. I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t given an extension in the near future, but of course he will have to prove on the training field and in matches that he is deserving of it, and I’m sure he will, and I’m sure Ange will give himself and a good few of the younger bhoys ample opportunity to impress him this summer and stake a claim for a place in the first team.
