Fabrizio Romano is regarded as the most reliable source in the football world when it comes to transfer news. It’s as simple as that. He is very well connected and knows the ins and outs of every major deal, as well as some of the relatively smaller ones.
So it was interesting to see him weigh in on the Calvin Bassey to Ajax rumour which has been picking up steam throughout the day, with latest reports in Holland stating that Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder has already spoken with Bassey on the phone, with a view to lining up the Nigerian as a replacement for the departing Lisandro Martinez.
He was asked by a user on Twitter tonight if the Ajax rumours had any substance to them, asking “Calvin Bassey Fab, is he for Ajax?” With Romano simply responding “Yes”.
Now, up until yesterday I couldn’t think of a story that Fabrizio has gotten wrong, until he said that Celtic were in ‘advanced talks’ with young PSG talent Edouard Michut, but manager Ange Postecoglou completely denied this last night.
So it looks like Fabrizio isn’t always 100% on the money, but his track record proves he is still as good an independent source as you can get, it’s why the guy has nearly 10m Twitter followers. He’s reliable.
I’ve never been one of those Celtic supports who thinks every reported interest in their players is made up lies by the SMSM. Some is for sure, but there will definitely be interest in Bassey this summer, I just don’t believe that he is worth £25m like they are all saying, and I don’t believe Ajax will pay anything near that for him, but I have always said you can never be 100% certain that a stupid EPL club comes in and pays silly money for one of their players, because you’d be a fool to totally dismiss that possibility.
