Celtic supporters from all over are paying tribute tonight to Lisbon Lion John ‘Yogi’ Hughes, who sadly passed away ‘peacefully’ in hospital at the age of 79 after a short illness.
His family have released a statement tonight which reads:
John ‘Yogi’ Hughes, age 79, passed away peacefully in hospital today after a short illness. He was surrounded by his loving family.”
“He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.”
“Always remembered and celebrated with love by his wife Theresa, his sons Kevin, Martin and John, his daughter Joanna, his six grandchildren and extended family.”
“He now joins the ranks of those who will be immortal as long as there’s a Glasgow Celtic.”
“The family ask for privacy at this terribly difficult time, and will release details of his funeral arrangements in due course.”
John spent 12 years at Celtic between 1959 and 1971 and scored 189 goals in 416 appearances in the hoops.
He was also a pivotal player in Celtic’s run to lifting the European Cup in 1967, playing in 5 out of the 8 games leading up to the final in Lisbon.
My thoughts and prayers are with John’s family and close ones at the extremely difficult time.
