It’s funny how things turn out sometimes.
Back in January, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou was looking to bring fellow Australian Riley McGree to the club.
The deal looked to be a goer, with Ange having one of his famous chats over the telephone with the player to talk over his plans for the player at Celtic.
Unfortunately, for McGree that is, the player decided to turn down Ange and a move to Celtic, in order to earn a few more bob in the English Championship with Middlesbrough in a £3.27m deal.
Ange and Celtic then turned their attention to young English born Matt O’Riley, a 21 year old with a strong mind, great attitude and bags of ability to match.
O’Riley signed for Celtic during that January window for a third of the McGree fee and has been a regular starter and standout performer ever since, with his displays catching the eye of a host of English Premier League clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Leicester City.
O’Riley finished last season at Celtic with a league winner’s medal and is now a week away from making his Champions League debut against Real Madrid, while McGree is stuck in 20th place in the Championship with Boro.
And judging by this tweet from Celtic Wiki, it looks like the home fans are not too pleased with the player!
As I said at the start of this article, it’s funny how things turn out…
