Champions League Proves Too Big A Step For This Celtic Side

Celtic’s Champions League campaign is over after only four matches after a 2-0 defeat to Leipzig tonight.

That is bitterly, bitterly disappointing.

On paper, this looked a really good draw for us when the groups were announced, but in reality, that certainly wasn’t the case.

And that is because we simply aren’t good enough for this level of football right now, as much as it pains me to say that.

We can’t keep saying “if only we took our chances”, we just aren’t good enough to take them. We don’t have the quality or composure to finish them at this level.

It looks like the Europa League is out the window realistically now after Shakhtar picked up a draw at home to Real Madrid tonight.

Realistically, our first time back in the Champions League for many years, we probably shouldn’t have been too ambitious, but to see teams like Shakhtar on five points and us only on one, for Leipzig to come here and beat us on our own turf, that stings.

It’s very hard to judge how good this Celtic team really are because of the league we play in.

Without naming names, we have a good few players in our team that look like world beaters, but at this level, they look very ordinary.

Still, this is this side’s first foray in the Champions League, and the plan is still to cement ourselves year on year as a consistent Champions League side.

Tonight was a reality check for where we are at the moment on this stage.

Let’s see how we do this time next year if we can get to a new level, but this season, we simply aren’t good enough.
