The news on Celtic looking to sign South Korea’s World Cup star Cho Gue-sung has quietened down over the last few days, after reports had emerged that Ange Postecoglou had identified the man that scored two goal against Ghana in the group stages as a replacement for Giorgos Giakoumakis.
It had been reported in several outlets that our move for Cho had “stalled”, yet, this was more these outlets spinning it to creative a negative story, rather than reporting on what was actually said.
Cho’s current club president said he wouldn’t sell in January until his club’s valuation of the player was met.
That doesn’t mean the move has stalled at all, if Celtic put in a bid tomorrow that matches their valuation then he’ll be at Lennoxtown by the weekend.
Are we expecting the club president to say he’ll sell him for two bob to anyone who wants him?
Hopefully we will have a more informative update next week on our apparent pursuit of the player.
The speed at which we moved for Kobayashi and Johnston to get them signed up gave me hope that Cho would be another one that got done quickly, but in fairness, the January transfer window is still about three weeks away from opening, so that thinking is probably a bit ambitions on my part, and getting players signed up in Nov/Dec shouldn’t really be seen as the norm!
What we did see from Cho at the World Cup though was his aerial presence. His two headed goals against Ghana were excellent, but he also won so many headers from corners and crosses that he was able to direct towards goal or flick on for his teammates.
You can definitely see why he supposedly to be seen as an ideal replacement for Giakoumakis if he were to leave, and in fact, he actually TOPS the World Cup stats for ‘aerial duel won’, despite not even starting Korea’s first game and them being eliminated in the last 16!
Check out the stats below.
