A Japanese football reported has tweeted tonight that J League side Urawa Red Diamonds are set to “splash out” on signing Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis in the January transfer window.
He shared a link in his tweet about the news, with the article not adding too much extra info, no mention of bids or transfer fee for example, but they do seem to be suggesting that negotiations with Giakoumakis/Celtic are going well.
Giakoumakis has of course spent most of his time on the bench for Celtic this season and hasn’t looked very impressive when he’s came on in the last few matches.
However, he did impress Celtic fans when he came on against Kilmarnock today. He got involved in a lot of the action and on another day could easily have bagged a couple of goals had luck been with him.
Rumours have been flying about since before the transfer window even opened that Giakoumakis was set to leave Parkhead in January, with most of the reports claiming he is looking for a better deal after negotiations for a new and improved contract with Celtic reportedly collapsed.
There hasn’t really been any mention of specific clubs interest in Giakoumakis from what I can remember, until the last couple of days where Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds have been linked with a move for the Greek striker.
Interestingly, Japanese car giants Mitsubishi, who from what I gather own Urawa Reds, may step in to help finance the deal, just as Toyota previously stepped in to help bring Brazilian striker Jo to Nagoya in a £10m deal, the richest of the league’s history.
