Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has given an update tonight on Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis.
His previous update came on the 16th of January, stating that Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds had come to an agreement with Celtic for 4m euros and that personal terms with the J-League side were still under discussion.
He did however note that MLS side Atlanta Utd were also interested in the player.
And now tonight, he has confirmed that the MLS side are now in talks to sign the big Greek striker.
He tweeted:
MLS side Atlanta are in talks to sign Giorgios Giakoumakis from Celtic as Designated Player.
#transfers Urawa Red Diamonds, leading the race since two weeks but it’s not sealed yet.
It’s interesting that he notes Urawa are still favourites to sign the player.
Giakoumakis Greece manager, Gus Poyet, spoke recently stating that he believes Giakoumakis is MLS bound from what he has heard, so it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
There is now one week left of the January transfer window, and clubs are always looking for strikers in the last 24-48hrs, so Giakoumakis may wait on deciding his future in case a better opportunity comes up.
