Reports have emerged in Holland tonight that Celtic are keen on signing Utrecht’s Greek striker Anastasios Douvikas, who is the current joint top scorer in the Eredivisie with 16 goals.
The Scottish Sun have also now wrote about the reports, which interestingly state that a swap deal may be possible with on loan Celtic goalie Vasilis Barkas, who Utrecht have confirmed are desperate to keep, but are not certain they can afford to keep him due to Celtic’s asking price, believed to be £4.4m.
Reading some comments on Twitter from Utrecht fans, they believe Douvikas on his own could net them 8-10m euros (£6.97m-£8.72m), a fee which in itself would be expensive for Celtic, but certainly not out of our price range, but it would obviously be of great benefit to us if we can significantly reduce that fee by selling them Barkas on a permanent deal.
Ange Postecoglou seems keen to add another top striker to his squad, as despite us signing Oh in January, it was suggested by ‘in the know’ supporters that he was also keen to add fellow Korean Cho as well as Oh, but of course Celtic weren’t able to get the deal over the line with Cho opting to stay in Korea until the summer.
I have actually seen Douvikas this season as I watched Utrecht’s game with AZ Alkmaar, which incredibly finished 5-5 with Douvikas scoring a hat-trick and also assisting the other two goals.
As you can imagine I was very impressed with him but obviously at the time did not think he could potentially be playing for Celtic down the line.
But from what I have seen of the player, he is pretty tall at over 6ft1, is strong but also pretty fast, good on the ball, good in the air and is often deadly in front of goal.
