Celtic Back In Hunt For Korean Defensive Midfielder?

It was widely reported in the January transfer window that Celtic had made a significant offer to sign South Korean defensive midfielder Kwon Hyeok-kyu.

Celtic at this time had already signed up Tomoki Iwata, so it seemed like Ange still wanted the 6ft3 22 year old in addition to Iwata, despite them both being defensive minded midfield players.

The rumours and reports died down however, but it looks like Celtic may be looking to step up their pursuit of the player once the summer window opens on the 10th June.

An ‘in the know’ poster on Celtic fans forum Kerrydale Street, ‘TheRepublican’ who has a proven track record of providing correct transfer information on the forum, stated a couple of days ago that:

“We are after a tall Korean defensive mid. As like before with Vinicius Souza, Ange wants help to shore up our defence at corners.”

The idea definitely makes sense, as especially against ‘Rangers’ that seems to be their biggest threat against us, and probably our biggest weakness as we aren’t the tallest team.

The talk on Kwon was then followed up by another poster this morning asking the name of the player that TheRepublican was referring to, with another poster then providing a link to Kwon’s transfermarkt profile, confirming “we were linked with him in January.”

Ange Postecoglou has already confirmed recently that he plans on returning to the Asian market this summer to further strengthen his squad, and with an offer already having been made in January for the player, perhaps this is one that has been ongoing in the background for a while and one that may be announced early on in the window, or perhaps even before it officially opens as we have seen recently under Ange.
