With Celtic on verge of signing another midfielder, should defence now be priority?

Reports came out earlier today that Celtic are on the verge on signing Australian international Riley McGree, the fee is believed to be around £2m for the midfielder. I must admit his ‘welcome to Celtic’ video on Youtube is not impressive. He looks like a Ryan Kent type player, speedy with good feet and not much else, but I trust Ange’s judgement and have to assume he is a better player than the little I’ve seen from him.

McGree would be our 5th signing of the January transfer window, the third midfielder alongside Ideguchi and Hatate, with Celtic also signing forwards Maeda and Kenny.

The question now for Celtic is, does Ange now need to strengthen the defence?

Let’s start with right back. I think majority, if not all fans would agree that we are covered in that position with Ralston and Juranovic.

Left back is a strange one. We have four left backs in Bolingoli, Taylor, Scales and Montgomery. Juranovic and Hatate can also play there. But we don’t seem to have a real first choice left back. If we were to bring in another one, I feel it would have to be a player of real quality, there’s no point brining in another left back the same level as what we have.

At centre back we have Starfelt, Carter-Vickers and Welsh. Jullien is on his way back from a long term injury and who knows when he will eventually play and if he will be able to return to his best form again. He could easily break down again after a few games, so he cannot be relied on currently until he comes back into the fold and proves he can handle it.

For me, centre back is a positing we definitely need to strengthen in. Currently, we have three fit centre backs. I think Scales could play there if really needed but ideally we need at least another signing to come in who is an out and out centre back.

It is still early days in the window, for me Celtic have done great with these early signings. But I now hope to see as sign a centre back, perhaps even two, and a real quality left back.

Defence should have been a priority before midfield, they may look good against spl opposition but were abysmal in Europe.
