“Baffling Levels Of Incompetence” – Prominent SPFL Account Hits Out at Celtic Board

A lot of the discussion after Celtic’s loss to Lazio on Tuesday night were about the board and the lack of investment into the squad in the summer, particularly in the starting XI.

It was very clearly to pretty much all supporters for example that we very much needed a new No.1 goalkeeper to replace the aging Joe Hart and a new left-back, someone better than Taylor with much better physical attributes.

But that didn’t happen and instead of focusing on brining in quality in the areas we needed it most, the squad was instead flooded with project players who are either nowhere near good enough, or at the very least, don’t have the consistency to perform week in and week out for a club like Celtic.

Prominent Twitter account Inside The SPFL, who has 52.6k followers on the platform, has been having their say on the state of the club this afternoon:

He tweeted:

When Ange left, I felt this was the most attractive the Celtic job ever looked, 10s of £m in the bank, a young treble winning squad & guaranteed UCL, they then hire a top manager, & somehow still managed to monumentally mess up the summer window. Baffling levels of incompetence.

When asked about injuries and Brendan needing time to assess the squad in the summer he replied:

Injuries happen, thats part & parcel of the game, however when you fail to prepare anywhere near properly, those injuries then compound the problem you’ve created for yourself in bucket loads, that squad didn’t need much evaluation, it was obvious what they had & what was needed.

And when the question was put to him about why Rodgers decided to come back, he responded:

That’s the million dollar question, most felt that his decision to come back meant Desmond guaranteed the funds he felt he needed to take the club to the next level, as unrealistic as this sounds, it now looks more likely he just wanted to make amends with how he left last time.

And finally, he also addressed the areas of the starting XI that should absolutely have been improved upon in the summer, writing:

IMO a GK who’s good on the ball was the next genesis of Ange’s team and a LCB of similar quality to CCV, & I think it was obvious in the CL last season they needed more athleticism in the midfield, those where the 3 positions I thought they’d strengthen, (before Jota left)

I’m pretty sure if Postecoglou stayed, they would’ve made a big attempt to sign Dominik Livakovic from Zagreb, he still might’ve went to Fenerbahce but I think Ange had already made it clear that was an area that needed to improve for his team to evolve.

It’s hard to disagree with anything that’s been said here.

For now, we just need to make do with what we’ve got and hope that certain players that have shown flashes of potential, such as Yang and Holm for example, can become much more consistent performers under Brendan Rodgers.

I just hope that in January, we do make genuine attempts to bring real quality into the team, especially in those key positions, because even domestically, nothing is guaranteed and we need to seriously up our game and start consistently winning matches again.

Ange had said what type of players he wanted for the start of the 23/24 season but his agent was working in the background to get him the spurs gig and the fans knew after the cup final that he wouldn’t be at Celtic for the start of the season, then in comes Liewell and all these first team targets become projects making sure his son looked at cheap replacements. Until Lawwell leaves this club is turning into the Whites and Kelly’s fiasco.
