That’s what their fans and some sections of our media seem to think. I don’t know what’s worse, their fans thinking he is the next Pep Guardiola or their ex players coming out and describing what he is like on the training ground, what he will be like with the players, how he will play football, despite never having any personal interactions with him in their life. The whole circus is utterly bizarre.
Van Bronckhorst was the only man interested in taking the job as no other club had touched him for almost a year after his disaster spell in China. His one season wonder with Feyenoord clearly didn’t convince any other club in Europe that he was worth appointing, you know, clubs with top quality football departments that know what to look for in a good manager. They saw that he quit when the going got tough in China and ran back to Holland, most likely before he was pushed out the door after finishing a disastrous 13th place in China with Guangzhou.
After his one hit wonder league season in 16/17, his team’s arse collapsed and finished 4th the next season and then 3rd the season after that. What does that tell us? It tells us that he certainly had some success in Holland, it was a great achievement to win the league. But that was it. A one off. He couldn’t sustain that success. And he wasn’t even close to doing it again.
I’m not saying Van Bronckhorst is a terrible manger. You don’t win any top flight league if you are a terrible manager. But let’s be honest, we all know there is nothing to fear here, despite what other will have you believe.
At Celtic, we have a manger who was not only a proven success in his own country, but unlike Gio, Ange went to Asia and succeeded. He was actually still employed over there when we brought him in. He didn’t publicly beg for the job like Gio and his agent did. His reputation as a winner and as a leader got him the job, not because he once played for the club for 2 or 3 seasons back in the day before moving on to bigger and better things.
Celtic also have the better players, that is a fact. And like I mentioned in a previous article, we will be strengthening that group of players in January, and I fully expect us to be top of the league by the time the window closes at the end of that month, and at the same time Sevco will have most definitely weakened their squad, considering it is imperative for them to bring in funds from player sales during the window.
Just remember folks, two weeks ago they were hailing Gerrard as the messiah, now they are coming out and admitting ‘well, he only won 1 trophy out of 9, he wasn’t that good’. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before they are saying the same thing about their new messiah.
